Australian War Memorial
Canberra, Australia
The brief for this award winning exhibition was to find an evocative way to bring the Australian War Memorial’s extensive collection of WWI written material to life: letters, diaries, and official documents that captured the personal and collective experience of war. Rather than treating these as static artefacts, the design strategy reimagined the gallery as a layered graphic landscape. Oversized panels and translucent overlays carried fragments of text and imagery at an architectural scale, encouraging visitors to wander, discover, and engage with the stories in a spatial, almost cinematic way.
As Creative Director and principal designer, I was responsible for leading the spatial design, object layout, and documentation, as well as managing the construction phase. My focus was on crafting a physical environment where the written word could transcend the page, becoming an immersive, emotional, and highly visual experience that gave voice to the soldiers and families of the time.
The project, designed in collaboration with Wingrove Graphic Designers, balanced sensitivity with innovation, creating a space that honoured history while connecting deeply with contemporary audiences.
