Date

June 2015 - June 2023

Location

Circular Quay, Sydney Australia

Frost* began working with AMPC on Quay Quarter during the conception of the architectural competition, initially developing the name for the precinct. The highly awarded 3XN tower is a crystalline, sustainable building and a striking example of adaptive reuse, built around the retained core of the original structure.
Personally, I worked closely with the AMPC team for more than eight years, helping to conceive and deliver the site-wide placemaking concepts, retail design strategy, digital strategy and wayfinding strategy.
Our brief for the signage and wayfinding was to bring clarity to a richly layered site filled with cultural, interpretive, and architectural gestures throughout and thus create a feeling of ‘complete design’ rather than the signage adding another layer. Another objective was to reinforce the natural permeability and accessibility of the site so that visitors are drawn into the lanes and podium during the day and at night and to encourage visitors to explore the site and to take in the awe inspiring views of the building and from the building of the harbour.
The core conceptual idea for the fitout by Tom Dixon studio of ‘SUPERNATURE’ is derived from the expansive view of ocean, land and sky, abundant in the Quay Quarter Tower. It is achieved by the pulling away the floor plates from the façade creating 4-6 story atriums. We leveraged off this idea of ‘supernature’ with the signage by firstly basing all the signs on the circle and utilising organic curves where possible.
The character of the signs are all aligned and suited to the functions and aesthetics of the environments where the signs occur. Our refined simple palette of finishes, consisting of brass, bronze, white powdercoat and black anodised allow for maximum contrast and together with the abundance of natural light contributes to maximum visibility and effectiveness.
